Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inner-city students with a predominantly Hispanic background. They are the nicest students I have ever taught! They are eager to learn, and every year we make great progress.
This year I am focusing on improving their reading and social and emotional skills.
To be happier, they need creative supports that decrease their anxiety. They need an environment that shows love and care to encourage them to do their very best each and every day. This is my dream!
My Project
Every year my students grow plants for Mother's and Father's Day gifts. These plants have had great success in years past, thanks to many wonderful DonorsChoose.org donors. We need flower seeds, seedlings, and a mini greenhouse to grow plants.
Since we live in the inner city, some students don't have exposure to planting.
This activity becomes a lifelong lesson. Many report how well the flowers and plants did and how they brought lots of enjoyment to their families.
Students have a choice of flowers or tomatoes. Since the weather is cold in Chicago even in the spring, the mini greenhouse should protect our plants during cold spells. The azaleas are a new addition, and many students have never seen one. They are also extremely hardy and grow well everywhere, even during droughts.
