My Students

I know the best way to turn a reluctant reader into an enthusiastic reader is to put the right book in the child's hands at the right moment.

As an English as second language teacher in a high poverty urban middle school, I teach students who need some extra help in academic language development to get them up to grade level in literacy skills.

Most of the youngsters I teach come to me thinking they do not like to read. One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is match them up with books they do actually like to read.

My Project

I have the best classroom library in my school. With generous donations from DonorsChoose.org supporters as well as a lot of my own money, I have built a collection of high interest pleasure reading fiction books. There are some book series which I literally cannot keep on my shelves. Just as soon as a Wimpy Kid, Dog Man, or Baby-Sitter Club book is returned to me, it goes out with another student. Several times a day, a kid asks me for one of these books and is crestfallen to learn that although I own the books, all the copies are being read by other students. I appreciate your generous donation to help me close the gap for the striving readers I serve by providing better access to the most popular titles.

There is massive evidence that self-selected reading, or reading what you want to read, is responsible for most of children's literacy development.
