I work at an ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse Chicago Public School. The racial demographic consists mainly of minorities, some of whom are from war-torn countries. With almost 800 students from Pre-K to 8th Grade, three-fourths of our population comes from low-income households.
Through reading and writing my middle school students are finding their voice.
Their exuberance, gumption, and tenacity inspire me to give them the necessary tools needed to be powerful thinkers, writers and speakers. I absolutely love coming to work every day because my middle schoolers inspire and motivate me. In return, I hope my passion for learning is instilled in them.
My Project
A pinch of this and a splash of that? No, not necessary! The simple recipe for student engagement contains one ingredient: books! Exposing my students to thoughtful writing is the quickest way to get them to devour literacy. Once they've had a taste of great writing, they'll undoubtedly come back for seconds.
This Thanksgiving, please help me feed my students' minds!
By reading poetry by Langston Hughes, learning about activists such as Claudette Colvin, and digesting rich fiction by authors such as Jacqueline Woodson and Pam Munoz, students will surely savor the knowledge these books provide. From there, inspiration is inevitable.
