"My test of a good novel is dreading to begin the last chapter." ~Thomas Helm Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the type of book where all kids have this experience when they reach the last chapter. It is a book that has the power to permanently turn kids on to reading, which is one of my goals this year.
I teach reading and writing to 55 exuberant, energetic, and eager-to-learn 4th graders at a highly impoverished K-8 public school in Massachusetts.
Our school is in a neighborhood notorious for crime, but the school is in its second year of a "turnaround" process, and the achievement level along with the entire culture of the school is beginning to show some very positive change. Because the school has seen so much turmoil in the past years, many of my students are reading 2 or more years below grade level. However, they are smart, capable, and full of unbridled potential, and I know that with the right resources and lessons they'll soar academically this year.
Last year I had 2 copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid in my classroom, and students would fight for it . . . everybody loved it, and it became the "cool" book to read independently. I requested a class set of this book, which I plan to begin my school year with. It is the type of book with themes that speak to everybody, and instantly turns even the most reluctant readers on to reading. It will instantly create a culture in my classroom that reading is fun and cool, which will go a long way in raising student reading levels and opening up doors for them later in life. I also ordered several copies of each of 3 sequels to the book, which I will unveil to the class after we finish the first novel together. I am confident that students will be thrilled to read the sequels independently, which will begin to instill in them a love of reading independently for pleasure.
Many of the most accomplished and happiest people I know are avid readers, and would readily admit that reading helped them get where they are in life.
I want my students to lead happy, full lives, and achieve whatever life path and career they want for themselves. I believe that being capable and passionate readers is an important part of this process. The resources I requested will go a long way in helping my students gain access to this life path.
