I teach fourth grade in a small, rural town in the beautiful state of Virginia. My students are creative, endearing, and love to learn with their hands. Their faces light up with excitement when a lesson encourages activity and innovation.
Fourth grade isn't what it used to be.
Our students are active and involved in many hands on and engaging activities. No more paper pencil worksheets and traditional assignments for these kiddos! Our county embraces technology and our students are reaping the benefits of using digital devices daily. Even with all this hustle and bustle our students need more opportunity for STEM exploration.
My Project
My students love to use their hands to build, pretend, and play. I want to take advantage of their interests in building to make morning work more meaningful and creative.
Engaging centers aren't just for little kids- older students love to build, too!
My students would benefit from daily exposure to some classic and new STEM products such as LEGO bricks, magnetic tiles, building blocks, and wooden planks to get their creative juices flowing in the morning. No more boring paper pencil activities before the day begins! I want my students to wake up and relax as they tinker with engineering toys.
These STEM related items will create a relaxing atmosphere in the mornings. These "soft starts" will allow time for students to be creative while they collaborate and communicate with each other.
Additionally, these STEM items will be used for early finishers and for specific STEM tasks. To enhance our curriculum, students can build objects and ideas from our current units of study such as the Jamestown fort, weather tools, and geometric shapes.
I'm confident that these items will be well received, used, and enjoyed with my fourth graders. I would love to foster their creativity and engineering skills with these fun building tools!
