I teach at a school where many of my students come from low-income families, many of whom are on free and reduced lunch. More than half of my class are English Language Learners and enjoy hands-on activities to build their vocabulary and cooperative learning skills.
Not unlike their English speaking peers all my students love to build and create.
These students are big risk takers and use grit every day to complete tasks given.
Just recently my students have been taking paper and building 3D houses as a group, adding different rooms and outdoor spaces during our many indoor recess days because of snow and cold.
My Project
In the mornings my students come in and have twenty minutes before they are expected to be ready to learn for the day. I want to give them morning activities that promote conversation and cooperation to build their communication skills. There have been many studies done on helping students learn social skills, these morning bins are one way my students can interact in a low stress environment.
I have many students where English is their second language and these STEM bins offer a chance for them to practice their English in a low risk setting.
Recently my students have showed a great interest in building and creating 3D models. My students love using bricks to build homes and create games during our indoor recess time. I want to continue to promote their creativity with other materials.
