Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our advisory has a set schedule in the morning with time dedicated to interventions and missing assignments, as well as social emotional learning (SEL).

Due to the success of our librarians voluntary book club at lunch, I want to start a class book club during some of this time to build class community, encourage my students to read for fun, and to give us a way to tie these SEL lessons into something concrete they are doing in class.

I think that allowing the students to vote on the book as a class will create buy-in so I want to give them the choice between some different books so they will have a say in what they are reading. The books have themes and topics that are interesting, relevant, and relatable to my demographic of students. I also selected books with heavy social/emotional and mental health themes to connect this to our curriculum while, hopefully, helping to build an interest and love for reading in my students. If the program is successful in my class, we hope to get it started across our sixth grade!
