This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a third-year librarian at a middle school and am thrilled students are back on campus full time. They are kind, good listeners, and truly eager to learn. After 18 months of online or hybrid learning, they are excited to come to the library and check out new books. They are especially interested in realistic fiction and nonfiction that features kids like them with real-life experiences.
This is truly a great school community.
When I have collaborated with classroom teachers I am continuously amazed by how engaged students are. Since our return, it's been great interacting with students again, and encouraging them to visit the library and read!
My Project
Last school year I did a project to get multiple copies of books for classroom lit circles. I was thrilled when my first project was funded, but now have more teachers who want to get involved, and not enough books to share! This is my effort to increase both the number of books I can offer to teachers, and continue to diversify the offerings teachers can choose from. Additionally, we have had some of the authors do virtual visits to our school and the students are requesting additional copies!
We would love to have full-class sets of books that students can read and engage in during the class time.
It's important that students have a choice in their reading options, and the addition of three more titles will provide this. By being able to read in class, students will receive the necessary support to comprehend and engage with what they are learning and reading. Feedback from participating students this year has been overwhelmingly positive. They tell me these books are more interesting and fun than the ones they're usually assigned in school. I'm hoping to continue modernizing the books we're able to offer for class novels and nonfiction.
