Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is an urban Title I school serving primarily African American and Hispanic students. We are 97% free and reduced lunch and we are a fully accredited school. Our district has just gone through a rezoning and we will have students new to us this year. We are starting the year virtually, so our PK and Kindergarten students will begin having never set foot in the building.
My Project
As we start the year virtually, our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students have yet to see their classroom or to meet their teacher in person for a real hug. The vendor now has enough in stock so that every pre-kindergarten and kindergarten student is able to have their very own stuffed ram (our school mascot).
We want our new students to feel welcome and hope these stuffed animals will help provide a connection to our school community and offer a chance for the hugs we wish could be given in person.
While primarily filling a social emotional need, these rams can also support academics through activities such as 'read to your ram' and journal writing.
