This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being selected to participate in band. See yourself picking up your new instrument, learning how to put it together, and learning how to play it. You feel pride and confidence the first time you perform on it. Twenty-three students at my school experience this in band....but more want to!

The beginning band program at my school is made up of hard-working seventh and eighth grade students who have shown high academic achievement.

They rehearse an hour before school, three days a week, and practice 100 minutes a week on their own time. Students are provided instruments and instrument accessories by the school because we are located in an impoverished neighborhood. Most of these students would not be able to afford an instrument on their own, and are very responsible with the school instruments. My students attend a very large school - we have over 1,400 students in attendance. Over 95% of our students receive free/reduced lunch, as well as breakfast before school. Although we are a public school, we do our best to offer our students every opportunity possible. This is our first year with a beginning band program. We have put on a holiday program and recently performed for an Illinois Senator! We are currently preparing to attend the city-wide band festival in May.

My Project

I am requesting two new flutes to add to our instrument inventory. These flutes are very good beginner models, and are fit for students who will be learning a new instrument. They have a very good sound in all ranges of the instrument, and are very well constructed. Having two more flutes in my band program would allow two more students to experience the joy of music through band. This year, we had more students interested in band than we were able to provide instruments for. I do not want this to happen again next year. Every student who would like to play an instrument deserves the chance to. Flute is the most in-demand instrument at my school, and I know many students would like to learn to play it.

By supporting my band program and helping us obtain two more flutes, you will be making a difference in the lives of 27 students who have a love for music.

Our rehearsals brighten the days of teachers and students who walk by during class and hear the beautiful sounds escaping the auditorium. Band has had a positive impact on our school.
