Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching fifth grade in an urban setting is a challenge BUT I am up to it. Being prepared for the real world is important to us. As a teacher, my mantra this year is ICANMAKEYOUSMARTER and they are finding out just that!
My 25 fifth graders are eager to learn but don't always have the background knowledge to make connections with math skills needed before they go on to middle schools. Special needs include learning a new language, wearing glasses for the first time and figuring out which ear hears better. Many of these students came deficient in basic math skills necessary to be successful in fifth grade. By working hard, they have mastered multiplication and division facts. Now, we are ready to roll through fractions, decimals and percentages with more ease.
Having fraction math manipulatives would expand our independent work stations. Peer teachers can extend learning with hands-on activities. Kids will get visual practice and become engaged by using math activities.
