My students need books which showcase different writing formats so they can have exposure to drama and graphic novels. While I LOVE Shakespeare, my students need some updated plays and novels to pique their interest.
Many of my students love to read and voraciously tear through novel after novel from my classroom shelves. But what I find most often is that they tend to pick novels they are comfortable with and already know they will enjoy. I want them to LOVE reading many different genres.
How will they know they won't like another genre if they don't have access to different types of novels?
It is with this mindset that I want to be sure my students have quality books in my classroom library, but that they also cover a wide variety of styles and ideas.
My Project
I ask my students to read an atypically-formatted book as an independent project. This includes drama (plays) and graphic novels, and while I have purchased many for my shelves, I do not have enough to offer variety beyond the traditional authors of this genre like Miller and Shakespeare. In researching online, I found many current authors and want to include their books, too.
These books will give my students more options without them (or me) having to buy them and will then live on my shelf for many years to come!
Plays and other formats could become their new favorite after exposure to the genre.
