When I think of childhood I think of a time of imagination and creativity. Art is something that students enjoy and parents support. Unfortunately, in today's classroom there is less time for artistic creativity as the focus in the classrooms is on reading and math.
The students I work with are bright, enthusiastic children who love to create when given the opportunity.
Many of them come from family situations where just daily survival is the most important thing on their minds. They come to school with this stress already on them and we expect them to spend their day reading and doing math with very little time for creativity and ways to express themselves. Studies have shown that art is not only a creative outlet but also improves students academic skills in other areas such as reading and math. Currently we do not have much time to devote to art production so I integrate it in whenever I can.
My Project
Presently we have limited space and we can only do one project or part of a project at a time. The students' desks are not only used as their workspace but they also need it to dry their projects on. This means we usually need to wait until the end of the day to do art and have enough time for it to dry. A drying rack will allow my students to create art any time of day which will allow me to integrate more of it into my teaching.
Art is so important for the success of all children.
It helps them in other academic areas as well as with motor skills and even social skills they will continue to use the rest of their lives. This project will allow my students to improve in all these areas as well as give them an outlet from their everyday stress they are experiencing. When I think of childhood I think of a time of creativity and I want to give that to my students.
