This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My ceramics students come from a beautifully diverse mix of backgrounds, and I want them to see their cultures represented and respected in the work we create together. This project will give us the tools we need—like bats for the wheel, rolling pin guides, and hand tools—to explore African and Mexican pottery techniques and forms in a meaningful, hands-on way.
We'll study the traditions behind coil pots, burnishing, surface design, and symbolism in both African and Mexican ceramics.
Then, students will use these materials to create their own interpretations—connecting the past with their own stories. We'll also use mirrors for self-portraits inspired by historical face jugs and Mexican folk art to talk about identity, legacy, and personal style.
These supplies aren't just about technique—they help create space for conversations around representation, heritage, and pride. Students will see that their culture has always belonged in the art world—and that their voice belongs there too.
