This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a first-year teacher, I have always dreamed of crafting my classroom to be a space where learning is more than just a passive process. I want students to be engaged, explore, and express their thinking in dynamic ways that will linger with them for a long time. Integrating art supplies like colored pencils and markers into their learning will make it possible to ask my students to not just merely study our core novels, but to imagine them; they'll make it possible for kids to bring to life their interpretations of a story's characters or environments, and be able to share such ideas with their classmates. Incorporating creative mediums like collaborative poster sheets and Play-Doh will redefine for my students what learning is "supposed" to look like.
As a teacher, I aim to make the experiences I offer to my students be challenges that are surprising, relevant, and ultimately joyful.
These creative and organizational tools that I am requesting funding for will help me make the time that kids are in my classroom truly matter. They will allow me to design curriculum that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and connection so every student can leave my class not only with new knowledge, but a new perspective that sees learning as something they want to do. The people that I aim to teach, kids whose lives extend beyond my classroom, are not just names on a roster. They’re young adults who all hold such powerful lived experiences, brilliant personalities, and the potential to change the world around them.
