The resources that were provided to help establish the foundation of the learning experiences that have taken place within my classroom have been nothing but transformational for all involved. Within even the first quarter of our school year, my students' accessibility to essential resources, such as the requested art supplies and folders, has helped to reshape their perception of what can learning can both look and feel like. \r\n\r\nFreshman students, in attempt to build a sense of community within the classroom and to scaffold their understanding of our core anchor text (Long Way Down), utilized Play-Doh to create 3-D dioramas of the areas they consider to be \"home\" for them. This activity, which looked to have students take into perspective their lives experiences, allowed the students to gain a greater sense of relatability to the leading protagonist of our focus novel, which tells the cautionary tale of a young boy whom is trapped within a cycle of violence that has been forced upon him by the neighborhood he belongs to. \r\n\r\nSophomore honors students were able to demonstrate their understanding of complex literary concepts such as symbolism, indirect characterization, and theme through more creative mediums such as two-pagers (Inspired by the pedagogical research of Educator-Writer Penny Kittle). No longer was their learning confined to more traditional tasks such as cold reading, annotations, and class discussion, rather such activities were instead used as platforms from which more dynamic, responsive, and creative outlets could be spring-boarded. \r\n\r\nStudents in my classroom, as a direct result of the resources that were provided to them, have been shown that learning can be a process that is both challenging and engaging. That they can grow through both consuming information and producing it. That they are capable of contributing to ongoing conversations within the world and have voices that deserve to be heard. They have grown to understand that their role in the classroom is just as important, if not more, than my own, and that we all stand as equal experts within the learning process. \r\n\r\nUpon learning that they would have access to basic art supplies, individual folders to store their work, organizational tools to support their learning, and many other tools, my students were nothing but speechless. The sense of confidence and pride they gained from learning that there was people out there who believed so greatly in their capacity to succeed and make a difference in this world of ours that they were willing to finance supplies to support them in their journey to reach success, truly was a sight to see. \r\n\r\nI truly cannot express just how appreciative my students and I are toward those who allowed for this donor campaign to be fulfilled. We are eternally grateful for your kindness, for your trust, and for your contribution to their continued success. \r\n\r\nThank you!","fullyFundedDate":1753320536071,"projectUrl":"project/more-than-just-students-theyre-the-f/9466385/","projectTitle":"More than Just \"Students\", They're the Future!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gonzalez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10080985_orig.jpg?crop=1533,1533,x105,y211&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752649320086","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-gonzalez12"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_29495","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2073,"numTeachers":146,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":80,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.4,"schoolId":29495,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Round Lake High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Round Lake High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/round-lake-area-county-district-116/round-lake-high-school/29495"}
