Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school is opening a free clothing closet for the students on our campus. 93% of our students come from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes, and we want to help meet the clothing needs that our students have.

Our goal is to have strong clothing racks for our free clothing closet that empowers students to feel their best and not shame them for not having enough.

We know that when students have their basic needs met, they are more likely to come to school. We want this space to be more than a clothing closet. We want students to feel like they're shopping for what they want and create a positive environment. We are intentionally creating student ownership of our space through participating in naming our space, designing the logo and volunteering to "work" and gaining retail experience.

This project started when we clothed a refugee family of ten people through donations from our school staff and community. We had such a positive turn out, that we decided it was time to take our efforts to the next level and create a space where students can come get what they need at no cost.
