My classroom is a studio for young artists. These artists make up a school family with varied needs and backgrounds and interests. We encourage each other, cheering on each student's successes and offering ideas and support when a project goes awry.
My students are full of creativity and wonder.
We are explorers, searching for insights into art from the past and from other cultures. We are like mirrors, reflecting on our own interests and learning more about ourselves through our creations. We are inventors, solving artistic problems through our innovative ideas. We are dreamers, imagining what we would like our world and lives to be like.
My Project
In my curriculum, my elementary students are often the subjects of their own work. They draw scenes of their families and friends. They illustrate events in our school. They make self-portraits depicting their traditions, feelings, dreams, goals, and interests.
My students deserve the chance to draw themselves in all of the beautiful colors that they are.
They would love to draw their families and friends accurately, without having to choose only the peach or brown that come in the standard set of markers. My students love trying to make their work as realistic as possible and I know that having these options will help them to take pride in their work and in themselves.
