Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade at a public, charter elementary school in California where our motto is "College? Claro!" (or "College? Of Course!"). This motto is one aspect of an all-encompassing school culture we call "College for Certain." Many of our students - of whom 100 percent are students of color, 78 percent are English Learners, and 93 percent receive free or reduced lunch - would not otherwise envision higher education as part of their futures. Readying them for middle school, high school, and eventually college requires a rigorous academic program integrating reading, writing, math, science, social studies, physical education, and the arts.
Many of my students are struggling readers. Some lack sufficient vocabulary to understand and retell stories at their grade level. Others are struggling to master story structure. Two have reading disabilities which make it difficult for them to access visual information. Still others struggle to stay engaged in reading. All need multi-sensory, interactive, and entertaining ways to engage with literature.
All of my students, no matter their reading abilities, love listening to stories read aloud. Hearing books on tape and following along in the text allows them to engage their imaginations while developing their fluency, vocabulary, and familiarity with story structures. Though I read aloud at least twice each day, their appetite for "story-time" is never satiated.
My students have always had additional opportunities to hear stories read aloud at our Listening Center. Unfortunately, our stereo recently broke, and as a result my students have been without this resource for several weeks. We all miss it! The wireless system that I have requested has the added bonus of saving precious learning minutes, as the children will not have to spend time untangling, plugging in, and sorting out equipment.
This year, I not only want to provide my students the opportunity to listen to books on tape during class. I would also like to enable them to enjoy this activity at home. Many students, especially the most struggling readers, do not spend sufficient time reading at home. Having the option of hearing a book on tape would be a tremendous asset for such students. The four portable tape players (Walkmans) that I have requested will become part of a listening lending library that will support the work the children are doing in class.
Your help will make it possible for my students to enjoy an activity that they love: listening to stories. You will also make it possible for those students who need extra support to listen to stories at home. All of my students will benefit from the opportunity to engage with literature in a multi-sensory way.
