I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth-grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are special needs students who are working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.
My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.
They use their critical-thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. Through this project, my students will learn to code, an academic language which will be as important as reading and arithmetic in the very near future.
My Project
In my classroom, my students are learning beginning coding. We have used the code.org lessons, and they loved it! After finishing the code.org module, they asked if I'd bring more coding experiences to our classroom and so I am asking for 8 Osmo coding sets. Through this set, students will snap physical blocks together to create sequences of commands and easily learn computer programming fundamentals.
Adding coding to our classroom will infuse our STEM curriculum with engaging, cross-curricular experiences.
It will connect the dots between science, technology, engineering and math for my students into real life applications. My students will be challenged to think creatively, try new things, learn from their failures, and persevere when unsure.
The biggest benefit of this project is that many of our environmental issues are being solved by engineers and this project will lay the ground work for students to acquire the skills necessary to help protect our environment. They will be thinking about how to put better systems in place to solve our problems. Is there a better or more efficient way recycle materials? Is there an alternative way to create energy to power the machine? These are just some of the problems students may be asked to solve in the future that will help make our environment better for all.
