My Project

My last project requesting board games for my students has been a complete success. We've begun using one advisory period a month for students to unplug from their technology (most classes utilize computers in education) and have a chance to connect with each other in real life. Having a snack and getting to play a game with others is a great way to finish off the week. Students are smiling, laughing and having a great time. After seeing students playing these activities, I realized I need to get a few more choices of games and activities for them to participate in.

Providing real opportunities for interaction is a much more effective way to help provide students with opportunities to support their social-emotional learning while helping them develop the skills to interact positively with others.

As teachers we often want to tell students what SEL is, and tell them how they should think, feel, act, behave, etc., but as Charlie Brown so eloquently portrayed, a lot of the time all they hear is "Waa Waa, Waa Waa Waa."

One of the biggest setbacks of the Covid pandemic was the lack of opportunity for students to build interpersonal skills through socialization. I think we need to give students more opportunities to interact with each other in a structured, positive environment. These supplies, including games, snacks, and arts and crafts activities, will allow me to create this type of environment that will promote students' development of their own skills to begin to understand how to better support their own social and emotional health as they grow.
