My students need shoes for school, especially in the physical education classes.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of the students will be the first members of their family to graduate from high school and go to college. The students are always ready to accept a challenge and try new and creative things.
Our school is a Title I school, serving students that are dealing with extreme challenges and difficulties.
97% of them receive free or reduced lunch. Despite their individual struggles in life, these students are dedicated to graduating and attending college or entering the workplace.
Hurricane Irma totally devastated our county. For up to 8 days there was no power in the area surrounding the school where I work. We were out of school 7 full days. 97% of the students at my school receive free and reduced lunch and many are in school all day, up until 6 pm for the after-school program.
Having shoes for our students will drastically increase the participation in school activities, especially sporting activities like basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and cheerleading.
As the students prepare for their physical education class and after-school sporting events, they will be able to use shoes to engage in different forms of exercise. This will drastically improve the lives of the students as they foster relationships with peers while they are learning about different types of physical activities. This physical activity will, in turn, enhance the students' academic performance.
