My Students

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way--things I had no words for" - Georgia O'Keeffe. Expression through art is another way for my students to communicate.

Deaf, Deaf/Blind, orthopedically, cognitively impaired, autistic..... I have them all.

We are one big happy family. Most of them are non-verbal but are learning to communicate in a supportive environment. They love "hands on" activities such as cooking, working in the "garden", completing their classroom jobs. Their favorite part of the day is Circle Time. They know the routine so well that I can practically sit back and let them take over. They help each other, take turns, scold each other, just as if they are "mini me's". Most of my students come from very impoverished homes. So I know that their time with me should be so much more than just educational and when I see the smiles on their faces or the tears in their eyes when they have to go home early, I know it is. While everyday might not go as I plan, and sometimes my classroom looks likes a disaster zone, I know that everyday will be different and challenging in its own way.

My Project

This summer I ordered crayons and glue sticks that were funded through Donors Choose. Unfortunately, I did not order enough and completely forget about paint. We are now running on empty. My students learn through Language Experience activities, making books and doing art projects about our weekly theme. They are beginning writers and therefore, I use art as a way to promote the fine motor skills necessary for letter formation and for life. Color is very important to these children. I need the "purple disappearing glue" glue sticks for my visually impaired students. If they use clear or white, they can't see where they've put the glue. Many of my students enjoy making patterns using colors. They have such a unique way of looking at the world and it comes out in their art work. My students need crayons, glue sticks and paints to complete the school year

Having school supplies is essential for all classrooms.

Please help me to provide my students with the basics they need to complete the school year. They deserve to have "color" in their world.
