Help me give my students engaging books and historical magazines to read in our classroom. I want to provide high-interest books as well as events in history told with stories and colorful illustrations.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an inner-city, Title I school. Our school has a substantial amount of low income and ESL students. Most of my students face daily struggles with more responsibility than a 10 or 11 year-old should need to experience. However, my students come, every morning, with smiles on their faces and ready to start the day. They enjoy school and are excited to learn new things. Most of my students start the year already years behind in their academics, but I teach my students that every student can learn and do hard things with practice and hard work.
My students inspire me every day.
I try to be a better teacher so that I can give them the learning experience that they deserve.
For most of my students, being at school is the only time they can truly be a kid. Because of this, I try to create an environment of safety while we learn. I tell them that failure is part of success, and I will do all that I can to help them succeed. I like to engage my students with real-world lessons and activities that they can relate to.
My Project
With the disruption of COVID in our school, there is a huge need for more reading. Students are falling farther and farther behind because they have not been reading enough at home. My students need more practice with reading. I plan to provide reading materials that will boost my students’ comprehension skills. I want to provide high-interest small group books that allow them to develop skills in vocabulary, recalling facts and details, reading for meaning and using comprehension strategies as they read.
Help me give my students more reading in the classroom.
My classroom has a shortage of nonfiction historical material. I want to provide engaging historical magazines that will bring to life events in history told with stories and colorful illustrations. These magazines will help in expanding my students’ knowledge on various historical events. The engaging visual diagrams will greatly help my ESL students as an added learning tool, but all students can benefit from these. I believe that these colorful and educational magazines will help my students become excited about reading and hopefully they will want to continue reading these books outside of the classroom.
