My Students

I don't know how it happens, but every year, I am always given the best students in the school. My kids have an amazing capacity for kindness and love. They love helping each other. They love helping me and are often disappointed when I tell them I have no other jobs for them to do because they have done them already.

Even though they come from the poorest of the poor in our inner-city community, they are always thinking of others before themselves.

We have several programs set up in our school to help with child hunger on the weekends and other basic life necessities. One day when students were getting pantry packs for the weekend, I overheard a couple of students planning to take their food to the homeless shelter down the street because they needed it more. Every day I hear or see them do something wonderful that makes me think that these kids are going to make the world a much better place.

My Project

Because of the struggles of teaching and learning through a pandemic, the fourth grade group we are getting in our classes next year are very low readers. After the third grade teachers worked tirelessly this year to make up for what they have lost during the shut down, next year in fourth grade we are going to continue that intensive work all while instilling a love of reading through year long novel studies.

The love of reading needs to be instilled at an early age, and if it is, that passion for good books will follow these students for the rest of their lives.

We started the novel study program with our fourth grade group this year and saw amazing results. Our students loved the books we read, had conversations about the characters as if they really knew them, and were even able to make connections to other characters and situation in other books.

As a fourth grade team, we are going to continue the novel study program we started this year, only adding in a few more books that tell stories from different perspectives: "A Wolf Called Wander" told from the point of view of a wolf and "Island of the Blue Dolphin" told by a Pacific Island girl. These new books will pair well with books about survival we have already purchased, "The Wild Robot" and "My Side of the Mountain". Our goal is to have the book in every students hand so they can experience the book either on their own, as part of the whole group read aloud, or with partner.
