My students need books that are multi-cultural to help with relate to the text and to help increase literacy. The Bluford High Series books will help achieve this.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"If one reads enough books, one has a fighting chance. Or better, ones chances of survival increase with each book one reads." -Sherman Alexie
My students are 7th graders at a school that is on the South side of Chicago.
The majority are students that come from low income families or single parent homes. They are sweet and smart, but they have some needs that are not being met that could definitely help them succeed.
My Project
My room has a classroom library in it. I furnish all of the books in the room via donations or my own personal fund. I have recently realized that the library is lacking in multi-cultural literature. I think this could be one of the reasons that my students are not interested in my books-they have a hard time relating to the situations and themes. Students will be able to check out these books to read on their own and bring home on a daily basis via an old fashioned library book card system.
These books will help my students because I know that they all have a love of learning, I just need to help them develop a love of reading.
With a better selection of books I think I can do that.
