This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a K-5 elementary school, located in a rural district in Virginia. Our students are enthusiastic and curious about the world around them. Every day they come to school ready and excited to learn, and their excitement is contagious. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and home situations, and many of them lack resources and support at home.
A strong collaboration between home and school is vital for students' academic success, and it is important to support our students not only at school, but also at home.
My Project
Your generous donations will expand our school's Math Closet, where students can borrow puzzles, board games, and other math materials. Students are able to take these materials home and share them with their families, thus encouraging positive interactions at home. In its first month of operation, we have received much feedback from parents and students about the Math Closet, and it has all been extremely positive. Additionally, there are many cognitive and social benefits associated with puzzles and board games. Puzzles allow students to develop spatial awareness, problem solving skills, and perseverance. Board games promote social skills such as decision making, turn taking, and winning and losing. Perhaps even more importantly, puzzles and board games allow for family time that does not involve a screen.
Many of our students do not have access to puzzles or board games at home, and they are missing out on the many benefits associated with completing a puzzle or playing a board game.
