This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school receive almost no musical instruction. I teach an unfunded music program before, during, and after-school. I not only offer it to my fifth grade class, but offer it to the other 5th grade classes on my grade level. Students who participate do better in math and composition.

Our school is located in a high crime rate, inner city area and the dropout rate is up around 50%.

I find that the kids that participate in my music program are more interested in learning and do better in school. They not only perform better in math, but take more of an interest in learning.

My Project

My students need more guitars for our music program. The students will not only learn the basic fundamentals of playing the guitar, but will also learn to read standard notation in first position. All students will learn to read chord charts, play with other students (duets, and ensemble), and learn to improvise and "jam" with other students.

I've been doing this for almost 20 years.

Many of the students want to learn, but have no way to obtain a guitar. I have about eight guitars to use in the classroom, but funding is difficult on my own, with your help, more kids can benefit from the program I've created.
