This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are voracious readers of graphic novels. We need more to satisfy their hungry appetite to read.

There are sixteen students in my fifth grade SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) classroom.

There are four girls and twelve boys. We are in a K-5 school in an urban school district. All of my students are learning English as their second language. They are from countries like El Salvador, Peru, and Egypt. All of the students are eligible for free breakfast, snack, and lunch.

My Project

Just a few months ago, my students were fortunate to receive a grant from DonorsChoose for new graphic novels. The students devoured them. They read them all. Now, my students are looking for more graphic novels to satisfy their reading appetites during independent reading. I can see that students are truly engaged with the graphic novels and even students who are not crazy about reading, have been captured by their words.

More graphic novels would help my struggling readers of English access the English language in a friendly, yet challenging way without being frustrating.

These novels also expose the students to a variety of genres that they could not access before like mythology, folktales, and sports stories. I have seen reluctant readers go to voracious readers. My students would really enjoy reading these new books.
