My Students
My dual-language, math classroom is made up of two classes of 4th graders, who come to school ready to work hard and better their lives through education. Most of my students are English Language Learners and many of them come from migrant families. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily, and many take home a food backpack for the weekend. I work hard to create a classroom that is welcoming and meets the needs of all my students.
Our classroom community is energetic and excited to learn!
Four years ago, I began transitioning my classroom into a "flexible seating" model. This means we use a variety of seating options (yoga balls, stools, pillows, standing desks, chairs, etc.) and my students are able to move freely throughout the day (i.e. no assigned seats). I have found that this classroom setup allows my students to not only get their wiggles out, but also collaborate more with their classmates. I have also made technology use a priority. Incorporating Chromebooks, iPads, and robotics into lessons helps to prepare my students for their futures.
My Project
Over the past four years, the use of flexible seating in my classroom has changed the way my students learn, as well as the way I teach. Students are constantly moving around the room, collaborating with their classmates and finding spaces where they learn the best.
It seems as though the quest for quality flexible seating options is never ending.
I often struggle to find products that can stand up to the demands of daily classroom life. However, my experience with the Lakeshore beanbags has been amazing! They wipe clean (a must in a classroom,) are easy for students to move around the room, and allow my class to utilize every nook and cranny of our classroom. The beanbags I've had for the past four years have been well loved, but it is time for them to be replaced.
