Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The scholars that faithfully attend our school are an opinionated, curious, and very cool bunch. They are wacky and excited about their learning and rarely allow their "coolness" to prevent them from expressing it. For instance, my proud athletes are also the ones who get excited when they finally break down a math concept or complete a project.
Although you may not see it from the outside, my kids have also demonstrated much resilience.
Our school is a Title I school where 92% of our students come from low-income backgrounds. Many are from families who have immigrated to our country. They are a strong bunch!
My Project
I am a math teacher, but I began as a humanities teacher, and I see the value of just having books around and visible! I have a small shelf in the front of my room jam packed with books that have been loved by students over the years. I want to update some of them, replace others that have gone missing, and update my library.
Especially since there are more diverse books out there now, I want to make sure students have access not just to free books but to quality, new books that act as mirrors to who they are.
Just ten years ago, most books were about white protagonists and the only books about students of color were related to history. If you look at the books that I've ordered now, there are a variety of reading levels, depth of topics, and protagonists of color! I especially chose books that thematically matched my students' interests. As middle-schoolers, they are curious about the world around them and the world in the past. I hope that along with functioning as mirrors, these can be windows for them to peer into other cultures and societies. Plus, there can never be too many books.
