My Students

"Can I read that book,” is one of the best questions I (a speech and language pathologist) can be asked by my students. Almost all my students are struggling readers and the mere sight of a book intimidates them - they think that they’ll never be able to do it. I want you to imagine the feeling you get from doing something that you thought would be impossible. This is the feeling that I try to elicit from my students everyday as they struggle to read and perform at the same academic level as their peers.

Despite their challenges, they show up to school each day eager to learn something new and improve their reading skills.

Many of my students come from low-income homes and don’t have access to materials that would help further their education. They are also in self-contained or integrated co-teaching classrooms and various levels of support and scaffolding are needed throughout the day to help my students comprehend academic material and achieve success.

Watching a smile creep across a student’s face as he/she realizes that they’ve done something that they didn’t think they could is incredible. I strive to see those moments every day.

My Project

My students need fictional books at various reading levels that will grasp their attention, have colorful images and are of high interest to help them become successful and enthusiastic readers. Because they are all reading at different levels and it is such a challenge for them, it can be difficult to find books that intrigue them. This library will help my student’s get excited about choosing a book to read...and maybe even give them the opportunity to fall in love with a new story! My students also love when they can learn new concepts and skills, and practice ones they know, while playing an interactive game. It maintains their focus and shows them that reading can be fun! The reading comprehension game will show my students that learning, and reading, can be fun, and that they can use these skills anywhere outside of the speech room. It’s important to keep children motivated and excited about learning, especially those who have speech and language impairments. Showing them that they can do it in the speech room will only help to generalize their skills into the classroom and boost their confidence in showing off what they know! Your generous donation to our project will help build a love for reading in each student.

This will keep our young readers on their toes and eager to keep going!
