My Students
Every day when we read in 9th grade English, many of my students say they have never read a book. Some of them have lost interest in reading because they have spent so much time reading for tests. It has become my mission to help them reignite their love for stories and reading.
Our school is very diverse with a large refugee population from the Middle East.
Many of my students have had interrupted educations, but they have been willing to give reading another try. Each day, we read and talk about our books. We practice writing in the style of different authors, and we hunt for new, great books.
My Project
These 22 high interest books will be used every day in my classes. They will be added to my class library for students to use, recommend, pass on to friends, share with others, and ultimately write about. I envision a class where we are all learning together, and we are all working on deepening our writing and reading skills. Because my students are at greatly different reading levels, I am requesting a variety books from a variety of genres and reading levels like The Lord of the Rings, Skinny, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower so that my students can improve their reading skills and confidence. These books will help all students participate in deepening their literacy skills.
I am convinced that reading, reading, and more reading is ultimately the most important thing that students can do to improve their education, but it doesn't stop their.
Reading helps students empathize with others as well as make sense of their own stories. It is the greatest indicator for success in high school and college, and it is an essential part of my teaching philosophy.
