My Students

Common Core is here! Last school year was our "practice" year for Common Core Standards. During the 2013-2014 school year Common Core Standards will be completely implemented. I need more texts to help to implement these standards successfully.

I teach at a wonderful school that is full of great students.

We are a Title I school. We have a high percentage of students who are on the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch program. Many of my students do not have books at home to read or transportation to the public library in order to be exposed to a variety of topics and genres. They get excited when they have the opportunity to visit our school library to check out books or read some of the books that I do have in my classroom. They love to share something they have read about or show you one of their spelling or vocabulary words that they have found in the book.

My Project

This is the first school year that my district is completely implementing the Common Core State Standards. These books will help me implement these standards. These books will be used for small group guided reading instruction as well as whole group to introduce the skill that is going to be taught. The students will gain a great understanding of different topics and will be able to respond in a variety of ways. Using these texts students will strengthen their vocabulary, comprehension strategies, research skills, written responses, and many other skills. Using these books will help me move away from the traditional textbook and encourage students to get excited to read and learn a specific skill.

This project is important because it exposes students to the text complexity and critical thinking that is required in the Common Core State Standards.
