Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first-grade students are excited to be learning together at a distance this year. They love sharing about their families, their hobbies, and their hopes and dreams. They are silly and playful and anxious to connect with each other in our zoom classes each day.
First graders are full of enthusiasm for learning, curious about the world around them, and eager to share their observations and stories from their lives.
We are able to share our ideas orally in our live classes and students also record their voices on the assignments that they submit each day on our digital learning platforms. But students' favorite activities are the ones where they can use their hands to create at home and to share their projects with each other online.
The majority of students in my class come from low-income backgrounds. Many of their parents are essential workers outside the home and their online learning is being supervised by grandparents, aunties and uncles, and older siblings. This makes having physical materials available to them at home even more important for their development and learning.
My Project
These beautiful art materials will allow students to create projects at home and to explore their imaginations. Throughout our time learning from home, art has been my students' favorite activity. We have integrated the content areas in our drawings of the ocean and imitated the illustrations of our favorite books that we have read aloud together. Doing art is the time of day when the students are always most relaxed and focused. They talk with each other and are proud to share their creations.
With these exciting new materials, students will create representations of butterflies and the solar system.
But most of all, they will use them to explore their own creativity and share what they are seeing with their classmates!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
