I currently serve as the music teacher at a school located in Southeast Washington DC. This is an amazing school that serves students from grades Pre-kindergarten 3 through 5th grade. We pride ourselves on holding our students accountable for learning and letting them know that they can do anything they put their minds to as long as they work hard.
Our school is a sanctuary for many of our scholars.
It is located in the heart of the historic Anacostia area. Our school is situated in a high poverty, low socioeconomic area. Each day the dedicated stakeholders at our school prepare our students to be world changers rather than products of their environment.
My music elective provides students throughout the school, the opportunity to explore and express themselves through music. My lessons extend beyond the 45-minute class periods. I provide music lessons, experiences, and opportunities through a variety of music activities that traditional music programs do not offer. The children enjoy coming to music because the classes are fun and allow students of all ages and all ability levels to access the curriculum and learn in a low-pressure environment.
As the music teacher, I provide learning experiences outside of the traditional classroom setting. Students in grades 3 through 5 have the chance to participate in the Monsters, Inc. Drumline. As the founding director, I birthed the vision for the drumline with the goal of bringing interactive music education and performance opportunities beyond the walls of my school.
Our school's band program is one of the most visible programs at our school.
We have had the opportunity to represent our school at various events including Fox 5 News Zip Trip in Anacostia, DC Public Schools Music Festival, halftime performances at George Washington University and Georgetown University, pep rallies, events at other schools, local community events, and with Mayor Muriel Bowser. The students in the Drumline show a level of dedication that is rare for before and after school programs in our community. The scholars come to school early and head straight for the band room to practice. Their level of commitment is inspiring, and it motivates me to continue to push this small group of musicians to levels far beyond anyone’s expectations.
The instruments that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional opportunities to perform and showcase their skills and talents. The drums are adjustable and will allow students to put them on and move. This is something we have been struggling with being that our current instruments are heavy, must be put on stands, and are made for adults. These new instruments will be extremely beneficial for the ensemble because they are lightweight, will give students exposure to another element of showmanship, and the opportunity to participate in parades which is something we've never done before.
