Monstrous reading is taking shape in fourth grade! I currently teach third grade but am looping to fourth grade next year. This is an urban public school.

This past year, I discovered the Classic Starts series while browsing at Barnes and Noble. I bought a bunch of titles for my classroom library. I chose to read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" aloud in the fall. I never expected the response I got. The students loved the original story and, as a result, I cannot keep the classics on my library center shelf. The titles are constantly in use! I remember one boy telling me on the first day of school how much he hates to read. Since then, he has devoured titles such as "War of the Worlds", "The Time Machine", and "The Invisible Man". He no longer claims to despise reading.

I cannot read "Frankenstein" aloud again next year as I will have some of the same students, so I thought I could read them "Dracula" and we could compare the two books. The text is so much more engaging when the students have their own copy of the book to follow along.

I am hoping you will donate to this proposal so my students can continue to invest and engage in quality literature that stands the test of time and builds lifelong readers.
