I plan to make students their own math money boxes containing play coins and dollars for them to use during math lessons. These tools will help them develop number sense through concrete learning and help improve math fluency. Counting coins and dollars are basic skills my students need to master before leaving second grade. They can also learn to make change and exchange coins for equivalent amounts. Later in the year, we will use the dollars to exchange for other world currency when students participate in our Ellis Island immigration simulation. During our Economics Unit, we will set up a play store to purchase items using our coins and dollars. These tool boxes will be used each year with my second graders.
