What can I say about my students? They are some of the best kids around! They are learning and growing in a very small rural community at the school I attended when I was their age. Being able to come back to the school I attended to help young children in my hometown has been very rewarding. They are learning a variety of different skills in addition to their academics. They learn daily living and independent skills to help them become more independent as they grow into adulthood.
These students deserve the world, and if I can give it to them, I will.
Despite any challenges they face, they work hard and always put forth 100% effort. As a teacher, I could not ask for a better and more deserving group of young adults to work with.
My Project
I teach a self-contained Life Skills Classroom. In our classroom in addition to academics, we work on daily living and life long skills. One of the main skills that needs to be mastered is money skills. Money is something that will be around as long as we are alive. It is in a lot of our every day functions. In our classroom we need a variety of hands on materials to help build an understanding of financial literacy. With hands on activities, the kids are more engaged and learn so much more. With counting puzzles, money learning centers, and the Exploring Economy Hands-On Activities we will be able to run centers that will be more enjoyable for our kids. Also with a Money Bingo game, we will be able to have a fun group lesson on counting money. The working cash register and self inking coin stamps will also give us a more hands on approach to learning. With the cash register, they can practice real skills that can be used on a job site. With these items we can make learning fun!
Building a basic understanding of identifying money and how it works is not a choice, its a necessity.
In order to be an independent adult, you have to have an understanding of financial literacy. Students not only need to identify money, but need to learn to add, subtract, find change given, and make sure they have enough to purchase an item. By funding this project, we are making sure our children grow up to be independent adults.
