My students need practice with money skills. Students will be able to insert money into a bank, prepare money amounts to exchange for an item and withdraw money from a play ATM.
This is a separate school that serves students ages three to twenty-one with severe intellectual disabilities. Many of these students have concurrent challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Families find it difficult to take the children out into the community once they have returned home from school due to the transportation of wheelchairs and behaviors. Our focus is to provide opportunities for students to explore and develop independent functioning by addressing students’ individual needs. Through home, school and community involvement, we create an educational environment to maximize student success. Being the Daily Living teacher, I am fortunate to see all 144 students each week. Many students require hand over hand assistance to complete an activity and most are non-verbal.
My Project
Our students venture out into the community several times a week here at the school. For some, it may be the only experience they get outside of school and home. Students work on their social skills, money skills, and multi-step directions while out in the community. Having the cash register, bank and play ATM, the students can experience some of the skills that are needed to be able to access money to be able to make purchases out at stores or restaurants. Ultimately, I would love to have a wallet for each student to carry and retrieve their money from while out. But for now we can just practice how to use it with your donation.
