I teach an accelerated second grade class at a Title I school where a majority of students qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. My students come from a wide range of households speaking many different languages and having varying levels of access to learning opportunities outside of school.
What binds my students together is their sense of a class family.
They know that when they enter their classroom, they can count on each other for help, advice, and encouragement. Most of our activities are based on cooperative learning and teamwork.
My Project
My students enjoy learning with partners and in small groups of 3 or 4. They do their best learning when they discuss topics that are important to them, and when they are helping each other figure something out. That includes math!
My class needs more math centers to dive into, like Magna Tiles to learn about three-dimensional volume, time and measurement games, and money tasks.
These math domains are especially difficult to master for some students, and having some real-world situations to grapple with will help them understand these concepts better.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
