My Students

I am attempting to replicate the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc.’s Financial Literacy Innovation Challenge 2nd place winning project, “Financial Literacy: Biggest Loser.”

As a teacher of students who are entering college, it is essential that students have a basic understanding of their various financial options.

By the end of the semester next fall, I would like for students confidently make wise financial decisions, particularly around student loans credit cards, and budgeting. We are a transfer school in Manhattan that accepts students who have persevered through difficult situations that may have caused other students to drop out. By the end of their time in our school, students are writing research papers that are a minimum of ten pages in length and are presenting their findings to teachers, non-classroom educators, and professionals in the community.

My Project

My students will use the materials requested to complete a team based "Financial Literacy: Biggest Loser" project. Students will be assigned to work on teams. The project activities will be outside where students will perform financial activities to reduce team debt amount (weight). The teams will randomly receive a scenario where a person is weighted down with financial debt and will work to get that person’s financial activities back in shape. Student teams will review the financial history of their assignment and visit exercise stations to reduce the financial weight. At each station student will complete financial exercises and video record how their exercise will contribute to financial success. Exercises: Student loan options (subsidized vs. unsubsidized; loan cancellation), Budgeting using online paycheck calculator, choose the best credit card (how credit scores affect card options), and credit card (maximum vs. minimum payment).

This project will allow students to view the effects of their choices, both good and bad.

Students will be allowed to make bad fiscal choices without having a negative impact on their real credit or fiscal standing. This is real life education that is essential to building good fiscal habits.
