This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the days of growing up when lay-away was an option or having to save for months to get something you really wanted? Now, credit and debt are running rampant. I want my students to buck the trend of our growing debt problem by learning what it means to earn, save, and spend wisely.
I have a culturally and economically diverse group of students, but the commonalities they all share and what I am most proud of are their great hearts and passion for learning.
They treat each other with respect, are sensitive to each others' differences, and appreciate each others' individuality. My students are enthusiastic learners who put their best into everything that they do. We are a Title 1 school that has a very supportive group of parents, teachers, and staff.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will be used to support my students' understanding of money and economics in order for them to develop a strong sense of financial literacy. The Checks and Balances kit will be used to introduce students to the concept of money and banking-how money is earned, spent, and saved. Students will use DynaMath and work in pairs to identify financial situations through the math presented in the magazine, develop strategies to solve problems, and create their own money word problems for their peers to solve. The Samsung tablets will be utilized in many ways. For example students will work in teams to study trends in the stock market, values of home prices, and gold value and write reports about their findings. Apps relating to money such as Great Piggy Bank Adventure and Mindblown Life will also be downloaded to support student learning. Books and board games will extend student learning and emphasize the importance of planning for a financially sound future.
This project is so important because children have had such poor leadership when it comes to money and finances.
They are growing up in a world of financial crisis and will one day carry the burden of our debt on their shoulders. Therefore, it is important for children to learn about economics at a young age in order for them to make wise decisions about the money they earn in the future. They also need to develop the skills to problem-solve when the unexpected occurs.
