Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently teach high school students with special needs. My students are on the Alternative Curriculum for students with Moderate to Severe Learning Disabilities. Unfortunately, this curriculum is a list of standards to guide instruction and not academic materials to implement in the classroom.
My students are amazing.
I look forward to each day of work because of the smiles and greetings I receive as I approach my classroom. Although my students attend a General Education High School, I am their only academic teacher. Some of the subjects I teach in the course of a day are math, english, life skills, community awareness skills, work training skills and independent living skills. My students have such a love for learning that I am pushed each day to become a better teacher. Each morning, my students look forward to writing down the daily agenda and seeing what activities and lessons are in store for them throughout the course of the day.
My Project
The resources I have requested will make a huge impact on the curriculum implemented in my classroom. My students are on a General Education High School Campus but fall under the Alternative Curriculum for students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities. This curriculum is just a set of standards to guide your lesson plans. There are no textbooks or set materials given to teachers who instruct students on this curriculum. Some of the resources requested are: a set of Independent Living Skills books to teach my students the necessary skills and tools needed to care for themselves once they live independently or in a group setting, sight words and comprehension cards to help my students improve their reading skills and magnetic money to post on the whiteboard because my students struggle with money math and having visual examples on the board will assist my students in identifying coins and dollar amounts during instruction.
Your support is greatly needed in order for my students to receive the education they deserve.
More often than not, students with moderate to severe special needs are over looked and their academic resources are extremely limited. The resources selected for this project will make a huge difference in my classroom and will enhance my students' academic experience.
