I teach first grade in a low socio-economical area of North Carolina. My school has adopted the math program of Saxon Math. As part of this program students learn about the different types of money. The learning is beneficial, but the program asks for the students to bring in the money themselves. We have had this program for three years now and every year I struggle to get the parents to send in the money for the children to use for the lessons.
The students in my class are missing out on a big part of the math lesson when they are not able to look at and play with the money. I would like to be able to provide each student with the chance to play with, look at, and understand what each coin is before they are sent to second grade. I am looking for someone to help fund a project that would include the play coin money.
I know the students would be very excited about using the money in class to purchase items during our lesson times as well as giving my students the opportunity to play with the money during center times at the classroom store. Making learning fun is the easiest way to get students actively engaged in their learning!!
