Money Doesn't Grow On Trees!?... Or Does It?

My students need pretend money and groceries, a cash register, special incentives (stickers and pencils) and writing boxes to learn financial literacy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We've all been there, whether we admit it or not. "There's too much month at the end of the money." (Dave Ramsey) It may seem silly to teach budgeting to a five year old, but it's not. Early lessons in financial literacy will get them started on the right track!

Our school is an applied learning school where students' learning is primarily through project based activities.

The students are eager to learn. The majority of students in my class are English language learners. Because students are learning English, we focus on reading fluency and comprehension.

My Project

My students will get a lesson in budgeting and money management with a simple money tree in the classroom. This tree will be adorned with paper bills, free for the taking. Students will be allowed to buy special items (pencils, erasers and stickers) using the money from our money tree. If they need a dollar, they can get a dollar. Sounds easy, doesn't it? But, the money runs out. Next, the students will be offered something grand, something superb, something divine... And it only costs... But, wait! There is no money left on our money tree! If only they had saved! With these materials, my students will be able to budget and spend appropriately. They will use the food and cash register to pretend they are grocery shopping. They will use the writing boxes to work on budgeting. After learning to budget and spend appropriately, my students can then focus on the fun stuff!

Meaningful financial literacy lessons are imperative for our country's youth.

Students must be taught that "money doesn't grow on trees." We must work hard for what we have, and must plan for what we need! With your support, my students will have a solid financial foundation!
