Money Doesn't Fall From Trees! Teaching Math at Class Store

My students need 33 different items (e.g. pencils, backpacks)to purchase from the classroom store with "class bucks" they earn daily for completing assignments and rule compliance.

My Students

Playing "store" is not just for kids anymore. The skills my student will acquire from shopping at the class store includes money awareness, math computation, the opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility, and awareness of how the economy works.

I teach in a third grade inclusion classroom which includes students with and without learning differences.

Some of my students demonstrate various disabilities, such as learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, behavioral or attention deficits. Approximately 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students struggle with literacy skills, such as math, reading ,and writing. They have not had the opportunity to enjoy the feeling of success in their academic endeavors. I have never met a child who did not want to succeed. They want to perform as well as their peers. I want them to have the skills and the confidence to be involved in class projects and assignments and to have their work posted on the "WOW" wall. They no longer have to attend special classes; however, they still require some special tools to be successful in a classroom where the materials are well above their current academic levels.

My Project

My students benefit from extrinsic motivation to ensure compliance with class rules and completion of home and class assignments. Once the student becomes successful in the classroom, the outside motivators can be removed as the student experiences the joys of success. Most of my students come from homes where parents have limited financial means to purchase school supplies their child needs for the classroom. I would like for my students to have these supplies; however, they need to experience to pleasures of earning them through rule compliance and work completion. Students will learn to appreciate and care for their materials once they understands the concept of "working earns rewards". The school store supplies will provide them the opportunity to practice many math skills such as rounding, estimating, and computation skills. Students will bank their "class bucks" for usage at the store during store hours and this instills the concept of "saving".

The impact of the donation will be broad as it will provide an excellent opportunity to teach a wide range of mathematical skills using a real world and practical situation.

The usage of supplies as rewards will boost compliance towards completion of assignments and compliance to rules. Your generosity will help make young learners competent in math and social skills.
