This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the general population understanding how to use money in our everyday transactions is a simple task. However, for many of my students the concept of money can be confusing and overwhelming.Their dreams for greater independence are diminished if there is not a breakthrough in their comprehension.
I teach at a Title One High School in Southern California.
My students are in a program for students with special needs. The Alternate Curriculum Guide for Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities provides the standards on which our program is based. The curriculum focuses on building students’ social, vocational and independent living skills.
My students are incredibly loving, caring, compassionate and hardworking individuals who bring a sense of joy and inspiration to those the lives of those they touch. A question that I hear repeatedly is, “Do you find your job emotionally difficult?” Consistently, my response is; “My students are the most uplifting, inspirational and amazing people I have ever met! I am truly blessed to have them in my life.”
My Project
I am requesting a diverse set of hands on math materials. These math programs focus on increasing skills in the area of money while utilizing a wide array of resources designed to teach to a diverse set of learning styles. Students will have daily practice using the Touch Point Money Math Program. The ability to touch the points, say the words and then solve the problem combines auditory and kinesthetic skills, thus making the materials accessible.
Knowledge equals freedom.
Acquisition of money skills will foster a sense of confidence and pride in my students. With an understanding and the ability to handle money students will be able to go out on their own, or under less supervision, with an increased ability to care for themselves.
