Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My kindergarten students at Hibbard School in Chicago are a diverse group. The children and their families come from such places as Somalia, Sudan, India, Morocco, Mexico, Vietnam, Guatemala, Iraq, and more. I would like to take the children on a trip to the exciting hands-on Children's Museum of Immigration, where they can explore the immigrant experience and gain a greater understanding of what it means to come from a far away place and start a new life, how immigrants are able to learn a new language, new customs, keep their culture alive, survive hard times, and so forth. I would like the children to realize their families are not alone in what they are going through, and that people from all over the world are more alike than they are different. The Children's Museum of Immigration is part of the Swedish American Museum, located in a neighboring community to Hibbard. The museum is nearby, yet far enough to require a bus trip. Nearly all the Hibbard families are low-income and would have difficulty paying the cost per child for the bus and the entrance fee to the museum. It is my hope that a kind, interested donor will provide an opportunity to help my children celebrate their roots, their diversity, and of course their similarities by funding this worthwhile field trip to the wonderful Children's Museum of Immigration.
