I work at P.S. 169 in Sunset Park Brooklyn. I teach a class of English Language learners. The children in my first grade class learn English through the content area. Whenever possible I try to provide the children with pictures or a concrete model. Recently we started reading nonfiction books. The children have very limited vocabularies and at times are unsure of the names of animals parts of the body, color names and other words to describe the animals movements. It's amazing how filling in the gaps in their vocabularies allows them to reveal some interesting theories and ideas they hold about animals. As we begin our nonfiction unit in writing, many of the children will choose to research animals. I would love to give the children some clay so that they can make models of their animals. I would love for them to be able to go home with a model. I believe this model would help them examine and learn about their animal in detail and would also give them a way to share their new found knowledge at home. I would modeling clay. The children would build a better understanding and a greater vocabulary. Please help my English Language Learners mold a better understanding.
